How to Develop a Rolodex   By Scott Manthorne

How to Develop a Rolodex

Whether you use a software program, or an old-fashioned rolodex, it is important to start building this business resource. Work on building your rolodex to include all individuals that you have come in contact with. Armed with this powerful tool, you know have a resource which you can "cultivate" and share your business with. Here are some suggestions:

  1. When you receive a business card, note on the back the date of the event, and where it was held. This will serve as a memory jogger when you speak to that person.
  2. Send a Thank You Note with your business card to everyone you meet.
  3. Follow Up with that individual and schedule a time to share your business, while learning more about the other individual.
  4. "Tickle your Rolodex". Walk thru the cards you have gathered, and work on building the relationships you see potential in. Have a lunch, or invite that person to another connecting function. Not only have you met a business contact, now you have gained a friend. What a great way to cultivate new opportunities!
  5. Quantity vs. Quality - Soon, your rolodex will overflow with business cards. You will now have to "trim the fat". By this, I mean reviewing each contact, and determining the future potential of that individual. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

Is this individual a potential client, or strategic alliance? - Has this person made an attempt to correspond with you either by phone, email or note? - Do they hold a position of power within their company? - Have they made an introduction, or endorsement, for you?
